Microsoft is a mixed bag for many regarding cyber security. Last week, Microsoft's anti-spyware beta scanned computer with Symantec's Norton anti-virus and called it a password stealer. Now another company, BitDefender, reports similar problems. They weren't too happy either.
While Microsoft prepares the way for its OneCare Live security product, many would laugh if you say Windows and secure in the same breath. Windows continuously gets hammered. While Microsoft did fix the Symantec problem last week, many shook their heads and wondered aloud what was up. BitDefender is reporting their product had portions picked up as password stealer too. While the problem has been rectified through updated definitions, BitDefender questions Microsoft's foray into software security.
"Microsoft fixed this problem with us in about a week. It's part of Microsoft flexing its muscles and displaying its tactics in the lucrative security market," commented Mihai Radu, BitDefender's worldwide communications manager. "In the antivirus industry, the best reaction time is from two to 10 hours. Do you actually believe that Microsoft will succeed in updating its products in two hours?"
The real issue with Microsoft security is a matter of trust. Do regular folks who use PCs at home trust Microsoft to maintain their security software? Do companies have that trust in Microsoft?
Microsoft will obviously pick up quite a few customers in the beginning. Their customer service must also be impeccable. Their response times must be impeccable. They won't be able to wait for "Patch Tuesday" every month to fix the problems. The Windows unit will need to patch the wholes immediately and the security research group will need to be on the ball too. They've not shown this as a strength in the past. They must show that strength in the future.
