IMlogic is warning customers that the W32/Kelvir-Re worm is spreading, leveraging Reuters Messaging to distribute malicious messages.
Reuters has suspended services until they are able to contain and determine the cause of the worm. The Kelvir-Re worm is a variant that has targeted MSN and Windows Messenger clients, but has previously not bridged to the tightly controlled network of Reuters messaging. This is the first incident where a virus has targeted a privately controlled user community.
The worm is intended to convince users to download malicious code using social engineering techniques. The worm sends users the following messages and users who click the link will become infected:
Is it you?
Once executed, this worm will send messages via Reuters to all of an infected user's contacts and shut down many of the security services on the infected user's computer. A list of malicious URLs associated with W32 / Kelvir-Re are provided by the IMlogic Threat Center.
